MONTE ZONCOLAN (Udine), 23 Maggio 2010 - E venne il giorno. La quattordicesima tappa del Giro d'Italia, la Mestre-Monte Zoncolan, 222 Km, segna il ritorno di Ivan Basso. Il campione della Liquigas Doimo ha staccato tutti in quella che i corridori hanno definito come la montagna più dura d'Italia, forse d'Europa. Al secondo posto, staccato di 1'19'', il campione del Mondo Cadel Evans (Bmc). Terzo Michele Scarponi (Diquigiovanni-Androni) a 1'30''. Quale miglior palcoscenico per Ivan Basso per tornare ad essere grande? Per il varesino è il primo successo dopo i due anni di squalifica, 2007 e 2008, dovuti al suo coinvolgimento nell'ormai famosa Operation Puerto.
LA CRONACA - Nella tappa più dura del Giro non partono i velocisti Tyler Farrar, vincitore di due tappe, e Robbie McEwen. Durante la corsa daranno forfait altri 5 corridori tra i quali Manuel Belletti, vincitore della tappa di Cesenatico. Al km 18 inizia una fuga di 6 corridori: i francesi Le Floch (Bbox), Turpin (Ag2r) e Pineau (Quickstep), il belga Sijmens (Cofidis), il venezuelano Rodriguez (Diquigiovanni-Androni) e l'azzurro Reda (Quickstep). Per loro il vantaggio massimo sarà di oltre 14' a metà corsa. A 44 km dal traguardo inizia il Passo Duron che i corridori percorrono per la prima volta al Giro d'Italia. Sono 4 km di salita con pendenza media del 14%. La Liquigas dei capitani Basso e Nibali inizia a fare il forcing: Dall’Antonia, Sabatini, Vanotti, Agnoli, Kiserlovski e Szmyd fanno a tutta la salita e il gruppo rimane forte di una ventina di corridori.
